Getting to know Stratego

Stratego is a turn-based, capture-the-flag game. It’s a game of bluff and tactics, of information gathering and subtle manoeuvring. It’s a zero-sum game, so any gain by one player represents a loss of the same magnitude for their opponent.

Stratego is challenging, in part, because it’s a game of imperfect information. Both players start by arranging their 40 playing pieces in whatever starting formation they like, initially hidden from one another as the game begins. Since both players don’t have access to the same knowledge, they need to balance all possible outcomes when making a decision. The types of pieces and their rankings are shown to the right. Rules of the game

Rules in Stratego are more than just guidelines — they’re the foundation of fair play, clarity, and competitive spirit. The International Stratego Federation (ISF) sets the official Game Rules to ensure that tournaments are conducted consistently worldwide. These rules are crucial: they help arbiters resolve conflicts, maintain sportsmanship, and uphold fairness for all players. The ISF, a global governing body composed of national Stratego organizations, convenes in a General Assembly to approve any changes to the rules. These are the current official ISF Game Rules:

Tournament regulations

The ISF Tournament Regulations are standard criteria set by the ISF, which have to be met by tournament organizers if they want their tournament being taken into account for the ISF Stratego Rating.
